How a Simple Idea Sparked a Quality Movement in Construction

September 4, 2026

Every great change begins with one frustrated person who decides to act.

Once upon a time, there was a quality manager working for a construction contractor. Every morning, he’d walk onto the site with a heavy heart, wondering if his role even mattered.

No one seemed to notice. Clients demanded perfection, deadlines closed in, costs ruled the day — yet management support was nowhere to be found.

He often thought, “This construction industry is broken.” But one day, that thought shifted. “What if instead of complaining, I start fixing it — beginning with myself?”

That single question became his turning point.

He began a lifelong learning journey, absorbing lessons from every experience and mentor. Slowly, his frustration turned into purpose.

Years later, as a Chartered and Fellow member of the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI-UK), he was invited to be a judge for an international Quality Team Award. That experience opened his eyes — recognition changes people. It fuels motivation, effort, and excellence.

When the judging ended, he decided to act again. With the support of his management, he launched the Contractor Quality Team Award — the first of its kind in KSA — to recognize and reward contractor quality teams that turned “quality” from compliance into a shared value.

During the first competition, one contractor’s quality manager told him:

“Thank you for creating this program. It changed how our management sees us. We finally feel valued — and the award criteria helped us focus on our weaknesses.”

At that moment, he looked back with gratitude. He couldn’t claim the success as his own — he had simply been the catalyst.

That initiative became a newborn program in an old industry, finally giving voice to its silent heroes — the quality teams.

And yes, you may have guessed — that person was me.

If you too believe in transformation and want to build something similar, I’d love to share my insights from this journey.
